Why We Do What We Do

Florida’s unique environment faces growing threats from invasive species like the peacock bass, green iguanas, and overpopulated alligators. These species disrupt native habitats, endanger local wildlife, and impact the health of our waterways. Our goal is to support ecosystem restoration by controlling these invasive populations through expert-guided fishing and hunting adventures that prioritize sustainability and conservation.

South Florida’s wetlands, canals, mangroves, and coastal prairies are home to a wide range of native wildlife that depends on stable ground, intact vegetation, and undisturbed nesting areas. Species like the burrowing owl rely on open, sandy soils where they dig and maintain underground burrows for shelter and raising young. Birds such as the common gallinule (moorhen), native waterfowl including whistling ducks, and the mottled duck depend on healthy shoreline vegetation for nesting cover and feeding. Even semi-aquatic mammals like the North American river otter rely on stable canal banks and clean, undisturbed waterways to hunt and raise their young.

The introduction and rapid spread of invasive green iguanas in South Florida has disrupted these delicate systems. Their burrowing behavior weakens canal banks and can cause erosion, which collapses the shallow nesting and resting areas used by native birds and other wildlife. In areas where burrowing owls nest, iguanas can degrade surrounding soil stability, making burrows more vulnerable to collapse. They also heavily feed on native vegetation, stripping shoreline plants that birds and waterfowl rely on for cover, shade, and nesting protection. In some cases, iguanas may also opportunistically consume eggs or compete indirectly with native species for space and resources.

Managing and reducing invasive iguana populations is ultimately about restoring balance to ecosystems that were never meant to support them. Targeted removal helps protect fragile nesting habitats, preserve shoreline integrity, and reduce pressure on native food webs. The goal is not eradication for its own sake, but the long-term protection of Florida’s native wildlife, ensuring species like burrowing owls, river otters, and native ducks can continue to thrive in the habitats they depend on.
